Saltzman's Watches traces its roots to the Providence Watch Hospital, founded by Joseph Saltzman in 1940; the current business was reopened in 2004 by Richard Saltzman and his son Evan. The shop says repairs are performed by its own technicians and certified watchmakers in its on-site workshop and are not sent out. Individual watchmakers are not named.

Brands serviced: A long list including Rolex, Omega, TAG Heuer, Breitling, Cartier, Tudor, IWC, Panerai and many others. The shop describes itself as the authorized North American service center for Luminox, Mondaine, Traser and Fendi, and lists authorized service for TAG Heuer, Omega, Breitling and several other brands.

What we do: Movement service and overhaul, antique pocket watch restoration, dial refinishing, hand replacement, case and bracelet work, and batteries and bands while you wait. The shop guarantees movement repairs for 12 months from the return date and says typical overhaul turnaround is 2 to 3 weeks for quartz and 6 to 8 weeks for mechanical, after estimate approval.

How we collect your watch: Walk in at Cranston (the service and mail-in center) or the Newport shop at Hammett's Hotel, or mail your watch from anywhere in the US by tracked, insured USPS, FedEx or UPS with the shop's repair form. Mailed watches get a written estimate within 5 business days.
